President's Report

I hope 2018 is off to an amazing start and that you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season!

In the blink of an eye December was gone and so was 2017.  And January 2018 for that matter. Personally, I’ve been insanely busy.  We’ve all been there – being pulled in many directions, challenged to keep up with the pace of life and constant flow of activities. Yet I always find that despite being so busy, SMPS Connecticut sure knows how to get stuff done!

At the beginning of our program year I encouraged everyone to “water the bamboo” so our planted seeds would grow and thrive.  I’m happy to report – the seeds are growing!  Busy as we all are, we’re progressing.

For starters, take a look at how our digital footprint and levels of social media engagement have grown since September when our program year began. Twitter increased 1%; LinkedIn, 14.7%; and Facebook 19.8%.

And our membership!  We’ve added 18 talented professionals from some of Connecticut’s prominent service providers. We’re now a chapter of 127!

So what will 2018 be like?  Here are a few of my thoughts and questions for all of us:

  • Challenges. Sometimes a good challenge lights a necessary fire. Are there program topics that would help inspire you to accomplish a goal?  It’s time for us to consider 2018-2019 program offerings.  Share your ideas with Jessica Parkins or Rita Joy.
  • Celebrations. I'm so proud of what I see other accomplishing. Truly. So let's applaud and learn from each other's victories. We have several social media channels. How about using them to toot your horn and promote what you and your firm are doing. Did you write an article or blog post? Did your company land a big project? Have you been promoted? Was your firm featured in an industry article? We want to help showcase you and your company. Please share your celebrations by e-mailing Marta Dabrowski. And please follow us to keep abreast of what our chapter and members are up to.
  • Chances. Maybe it's time to take a chance - all bets on you! Don't struggle with self-doubt. How about pairing up with a mentor for guidance, motivation and support? Kathy Nanowki of our leadership committee can help.

If the characteristics of bamboo can be likened to our chapter, we are firmly rooted and committed to continuous growth. So, keep watering that bamboo! I can't wait to hear your plans and goals for this year.

From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU to all who sponsor, volunteer their time or attend our programs. I look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Sharon Pomeroy, CPSM
President, SMPS Connecticut 2017/2018

Past Program Recap

Happy birthday, SMPS CT! We celebrated our 35th birthday in November, starting with a panelist program on event management best practices. The presentation was followed by networking hour featuring those delicious cupcakes pictured above. The night concluded with a raffle for a free SMPS membership - congratulations to winner, Cathie Reese of Geomatrix Productions, Inc! Read our Birthday Bash and Event Management Program recap for all the details.

December's program, Fireside Chat with Carolyn Bligh, featured an intimate fireside chat with past president Carolyn Bligh. Members gathered at The Marquee in Hartford to ask questions and learn about Carolyn's experiences and successful career in the AEC industry. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Carolyn!

We kicked off 2018 with two special events! First was a team-up event with Leadership Greater Hartford for a free night of networking at LGH's 4th Tuesday After Hours. Our next program was a Photography Social held at TimeFrozen Studios, who you may recognize as one of our annual partners. Owner and photography expert Keith Claytor shared camera basics and taught us in an interactive training that some quick adjustments in Adobe Lightroom can make a world of difference in headshots and architectural photos.
