Have you ever had someone mispronounce your name, or shorten it without asking? It might seem like a small thing, but names carry a lot of meaning. They are often connected to our culture, our family, and our identity. When someone takes the time to learn how to say your name correctly, it shows respect. When they don’t, it can sometimes make people feel like they don’t fully belong. And honestly, some names take a little practice. That is okay. What really matters is the effort.
If you are not sure how to pronounce someone’s name, just ask. And if you forget, it is perfectly fine to ask again. It is much better than guessing or avoiding it.
As we go through the week, it is a good reminder that inclusion can start with something simple. Taking the time to say someone’s name correctly is a small action that can make a big difference.
