Beyond the Numbers

I was out hiking with my sons recently, and we got into a great conversation that stuck with me. It made me think—this would be the perfect DEI moment to share.

Sometimes when we talk about DEI, the focus shifts to numbers—how many people were hired, how diverse leadership is, whether we’re hitting goals. And yeah, tracking progress matters. But that’s not really the heart of it.  At its core, DEI is about being good to each other. It’s about seeing the people around us for who they are and making room for them to show up fully—without feeling like they have to shrink or change to fit in.  It’s about creating a workplace where everyone feels safe, respected, and truly heard—not just the people who check a certain box.

When we boil DEI down to stats or surface-level stuff, we lose sight of what really matters. Inclusion isn’t a checkbox. It’s a choice—one that makes our teams stronger, our culture better, and our work more meaningful.  So maybe ask yourself: Are we doing this because we truly care, or just because it looks good? What matters more—how things appear, or how people actually feel?

Because real inclusion starts with empathy. Everything else builds from there.
