DEI Moment with Lisa Pavano, CPSM: July 2026

This year, our DEI moments have covered a lot of ground. We've talked about flexibility, different communication styles, accessibility, generational perspectives, and the assumptions we sometimes make without realizing it. While each topic was different, they all shared a common thread: recognizing that people experience the world differently than we do. DEI is not about having all the right answers. It's about being curious. It's about listening before assuming, making room for different perspectives, and understanding that what works for one person may not work for another.
The good news is that inclusion doesn't require grand gestures. It often shows up in simple actions, inviting someone into the conversation, considering a different viewpoint, or extending a little grace and flexibility.
As we close out another SMPS year, I hope we continue to carry that mindset forward. Because when people feel valued, respected, and included, our organizations, our profession, and our community are all stronger for it.
Thank you for allowing me to share these moments with you throughout the year.
